It is a sad fact of modern life that violent confrontations are becoming all too frequent.

Mobile phone theft is just the latest trend in a steadily increasing tide of violence that threatens every facet of our society.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Bullying at school or on the way home has always been a problem.  Street crime, a nice euphemism for violent attack, is increasing. And at the extreme end, rape or abductions which are up from 140 per annum to a staggering 577 in 2000!.

What are the options?

Karate or boxing are effective methods of self defence, however they can also be violent and aggressive. In addition, a degree of strength and power is necessary for a child to defend against a much larger assailant. Judo is a sport and is designed for competition and can lack practicality in a real situation.

Aikido offers a real alternative. Emphasising avoidance, evasion and movement, an attacker can find that their intended victim has either eluded them completely or turned the tables.
