Sasori Te translates as ‘Scorpion Hand’. It is a core style of Wado Ryu Karate with other elements such as Kyusho Jutsu and Escrima.
Wado Ryu Karate was developed in 1938 by Hironori Ohtsuka, who at that time held the Menkyo Kaiden (highest level teaching license) of the Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu.
A true visionary, he blended Okinawan Karate with the traditional Japanese Samurai arts. This gave a martial system that incorporated the kicks and punches of Okinawan karate, the throws, joint locks and take downs of Jujitsu and the weapons of the Samurai battlefields such as Katana and Tanto.
Following years of research into Okinawan karate systems, Professor Rick Clark 8th Dan, has brought back into the open the secrets of Kyusho Jutsu, (vital points attacks) contained within the old katas. These principles are now added to our Wado Ryu to give the extra sting to the applications. Kyusho Jutsu enables even quite small individuals to overcome much larger attackers when correctly applied.
The Philippino martial art of Escrima contains a range of techniques involving short sticks. As these weapons are so easily available or readily improvised and yet so devastatingly effective, we have added many of these principles into our style. This gives a modern and street effective slant to a traditional art. Also within Escrima are some of the most effective knife techniques in the world. As the knife becomes more prolific in street attacks it made sense to look to the finest exponents for practical solutions.
This then is the essence of Sasori Te. A core of practical, battlefield proven martial arts stretching back a thousand years yet with a willingness to remain open minded to the requirements of modern life.
