In 1477, during the Second Sho Dynasty, swords and other weapons were banned from Okinawa and the Ryukyu islands by Emperor Shoshin. It was as a direct result of Shoshin's edict that Okinawans turned to the development of karate (open hand) fighting. Although kobudo weapons are not really a part of karate, their development has shadowed the development and evolution of karate to the degree that they are almost inseparable. In 1600 the Japanese invaded and occupied Okinawa. As a conquering army they used the continued prohibition of weapons as a method of controlling the population. Therefore only Japanese samurai's were permitted to own and carry weaponsOkinawan karate further developed from its Chinese roots. Just as the monks in China had developed weapons from seemingly innocent items such as the staff, so to did the Okinawans. These creative farmers and fishers resorted to adapting the implements of their everyday working life. These weapons include the Bo, the Sai, the Tonfa, the Kama, the Nunchakus, the three sectional staff, Bokken (sword), Jo (short staff), Arnis, Knife fighting, and open hand techniques. |

Grades That REALLY mean something.
If you are keen to progress, then you’ll be interested in the grading syllabus. Our grades are internationally recognised so you will know that when you have achieved a grade it is not just valid in your own group, but world-wide.
And in these days when you can even buy a black belt on EBay you’ll know your grade really means something!
You will progress at your own rate. As we do not charge for gradings, we have no monetary interest in whether you progress quickly or take your time. Your grade will be a true reflection of your skills and not just an indication of time served or money spent. |
